What a shame that in this year of the London Olympics that our Sports Day had to be cancelled as a result of the atrocious weather we have had this summer. Below Mr Shutt has outlined some of the sporting highlights of the Year. I thought it was interesting reading an article in The Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago which lamented the lack of sport in State schools and lauded the Independent sector by looking at the number of top sportsmen who are from that background. However there is a lot of competitive sport taking place across the country in State schools and as a school with very limited facilities we do extremely well in terms of success and opportunity for our pupils (see below). Public schools have more money to spend on facilities, time given to sporting practises and providing for individual coaches who have played these sports at a high level.
I shall be writing to Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt to see if any of this “Olympic legacy” can be diverted to Fulford by way of a Sports Hall. If we can achieve so much with so little then just think what our young people could achieve on a slightly more even playing field ….
