Physical Education
The P.E. department is an enthusiastic and thriving one with plenty of sporting opportunities for pupils, our ethos being “Sport for all, for life!”
We aim to provide as many sporting experiences for our pupils ranging from Football to Ultimate Frisbee, from refereeing matches to the ever popular leadership courses. The main aim is to provide our pupils with a pathway through to the world of sport.
Staff
Mr Shutt leads the department as the Head of P.E. with Miss Murray as Head of Girls P.E. Mr Lunn teaches both boys P.E. and GCSE P.E. as well as Mrs Snow and Mrs Ford who share the other half of the girls department. Mrs Snow is also the school’s SSCO and co-ordinates our primary cluster of schools.
Key stage 3
At Key Stage 3, pupils will be taught the fundamentals of sport with an emphasis on team sports such as Netball, Football, Hockey and Rugby. Alongside these we offer Gymnastics, Cross Country as well as Basketball which is becoming ever more popular!
It is these fundamentals that allow our pupils to build a repertoire of motor control which will allow further development in the key stage. Pupils are streamed in year 8 and 9 to provide the best opportunity for fair competition as well as progression.
As from next year we will be introducing Level 2 BTEC Sport to half the year 9 pupils which will see them gaining 1 GCSE by the end of the key stage. This will be done in a practical way with pupils gaining knowledge throughout the year and tracking this in a BTEC booklet as evidence.
Key Stage 4
Core P.E. at key stage 4 is 1 lesson per week. In years 10 and 11 the pupils are given the option as to what sports they do. The use of the Universities facilities allows a wider choice with pupils opting for Badminton, hockey, 6 A – Side Soccer and Multi-gym to name just a few. The emphasis is on recreational sport in these very hectic and stress laden 2 years.
Pupils opting for GCSE P.E. in year 10 will have a further 5 lessons over the 2 week timetable which will incorporate a mixture of practical and theory lessons. We have had excellent results since starting the course in 2000 and because of this the course grows each year with an average cohort of roughly 50 pupils per year. The course is very popular however, it is very different from the normal P.E. set up.
Key Stage 5
‘A’ Level P.E. was introduced back in September 2005 as a pathway for pupils to continue sport into the sixth form. The progression from GCSE P.E is a smooth one as we follow the same Edexcel board. Pupils are required to undertake a number of coursework tasks as well as provide evidence of their continuing excellence in 1 sporting field, this can now be as a Performer, Leader or Official!
The coursework is 50% of the marks with the end of year exam making up the difference. Again like the GCSE we have gone from strength to strength at ‘A’ Level and have produced some excellent results over recent years. It is an exciting course and allows pupils that practical base for learning. In order to gain access to this course we ask for a grade B at GCSE Science.
Extra Curricular
The P.E. department prides itself on the wide range of extra - curricular activities it offers. Clubs start in year 7 and go on throughout the school. Our most well attended clubs are, Football, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Cricket, Tennis, Rounders, Athletics and Cross Country with fixtures in local area leagues played from years 7 to 11. Practises are held at lunchtimes and fixtures go on after school.
