Design Technology

The Design and Technology department is an imaginative and creative department.  Our aim is to give pupils a greater appreciation of how products are developed, as well as helping pupils to create their own high quality pieces.

Staff

The Design and Technology department consists eight teachers who have a wide range of abilities and experience in the subject.

Key stage 3

Pupils will study Design and Technology for two hours per week, focussing on aspects of design and making activities.  One hour will be based in a Resistant Materials area and the other will be spent in a Food area for half of the year and Textiles for the other half.

Activities taking place will be varied, but often include focused tasks designed to develop specific skills, or longer projects aimed to develop creative thinking.

Pupils will have the opportunity to work with a range of materials, equipment and processes during Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 4

At GCSE level, pupils have the opportunity to specialise in a specific area of Design and Technology.  These are:

Resistant Materials

Electronic Products

Graphic Products

Food Technology

Textile Technology

Pupils studying these subjects will study specific materials and processes in greater depth.  They will work more independently to produce a design portfolio and 3D outcome as part of their coursework.  Pupils will also sit and exam at the end of Year 11 to contribute towards their final GCSE grade.

Key Stage 5

At A-level pupils can choose to study one of two courses:

D&T 3D Product Design:

This course is a Product Design course but the emphasis of any students’ specialism is to some extent dictated by the students.  If a student has a particular interest in graphics then they can put more of a modelling slant on their work where if a student has more an interest in Resistant Material then they can specialise in a more wood, metal or plastics approach to their work.

All students will produce a design portfolio and 3D outcome to submit as part of their final assessment.  They will also sit an exam at the end of Year 12 and Year13 to contribute towards their final grade.

 D&T Textile Product Design:

Students will study the design and making of fabric-based products in greater depth.

All students will produce a design portfolio and 3D outcome to submit as part of their final assessment.  They will also sit an exam at the end of Year 12 and Year13 to contribute towards their final grade.

Extra Curricular

The Design and Technology department often takes students to take part in competitions and design shows across the region, including Elvington inspirations and the Rotary club challenge.
